Frail Mitch McConnell casts first vote in months as health fears shadow final term

Jump to content All News Sport Culture Lifestyle Former Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell returned to Capitol Hill on Monday (Reuters) Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell returned to Capitol Hill on Monday for his first public appearance and vote since being hospitalized after a fall in June. McConnell acknowledged his recovery from the fall and that his childhood polio remains ongoing, noting he will continue physical therapy while attending crucial Senate votes. The 84-year-old senator faced scrutiny during his weeks-long stay in the hospital and rehab center, including calls from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to provide video proof of his health.

McConnell, who retired as Senate GOP leader in January 2025, previously announced that he will not seek re-election and will depart the Senate at the end of his term. His public return comes amid heightened scrutiny surrounding the health and age of long-serving members of Congress.
